Amino acids are commonly labeled as the building blocks of protein. They can help build proteins or perform a number of different functions. 

There are 20 different amino acids found within the body, but only nine are considered essential for health.

Branch chain amino acids (BCAAs) include three different essential amino acids used in various muscle functions within the body.

Leucine is one of the most critical BCAAs for protein synthesis and other metabolic functions (1). It helps regulate blood-sugar levels, grow and repair muscle and bone tissue, regulate hormone production, and even helps heal wounds. It also helps prevent the breakdown of muscle proteins after trauma or severe stress. 

Isoleucine is another essential amino acid that helps assist with wound healing, detoxification of nitrogenous wastes, stimulating immune function, and promoting secretion of several hormones (2). 

Valine is a BCAA found in many proteins and is used for muscle growth, tissue repair, and energy (3).

Each of these BCAAs work together to help prevent muscle fatigue during workouts and increase the rate of recovery following workouts. 

What do BCAAs Do?

BCAAs can help improve muscle function. A study was performed on 16 participants who were assigned to use BCAAs or a placebo group. The participants performed maximum squat efforts to induce muscle damage (4). The results showed improvements in a number of different performance metrics including: isometric strength, reduced muscle soreness, and enhanced recovery.

Another study looked at eight trials of BCAAs on muscle damage. The results indicated BCAAs are can improve the rate of recovery after performing exhaustive and damaging exercise (5).

BCAAs can also preserve lean body mass while in a caloric deficit. A 2016 study looked at 17 resistance trained males who used BCAA’s or a control group (6). The BCAA group lost fat mass while maintaining muscle mass better than other groups. BCAAs can preserve skeletal muscle performance while losing fat mass.

L-Carnitine

L-carnitine is derived from amino acids and play a critical role in energy production (7). It transports long-chain fatty acids to the mitochondria to be oxidized for energy purposes. 

One of the most profound benefits of L-carnitine is weight loss. One 2016 meta-analysis looked at nine separate studies and found that subjects receiving L-carnitine lost significantly more weight than other groups (8). 

But its positive effects go beyond weight loss. L-carnitine has also been shown to improve exercise recovery. One study looked at 10 resistance trained men who took L-carnitine or a placebo for a three week period. The data indicated L-carnitine supplementation is effective for assisting in resistance training recovery (9).

Other health factors may also improve from L-carnitine consumption. A 2009 study looked at type 2 diabetics over a 24 week period. It found that systolic blood pressure decreased significantly by almost 10 points (10). The study also indicated improved insulin resistance as well.

L-carnitine may be beneficial to athletic individuals, but research suggests all types of people may be able to benefit from supplementation.
